Do Volleyball Games Have Guarantees? Yes, But Compared to Football…
NECBlitz recently obtained documentation from Central Michigan University for a volleyball MTE played at BYU. While most volleyball contracts we’ve obtained are for home and homes and do not have a guarantee, we were able to answer a question we’ve had for some time: do non-revenue sports have guarantees for traveling to the P4 in their contracts?
The answer is: yes, but not the kind of guarantees you see in football.
Traveling to a P4 team in football can net half a million dollars, but in volleyball Central Michigan received $14,000 to travel to BYU along with accommodations and tickets for a ticketed game against the Cougars. That seems like enough to get a team to Utah, although I write about sports in the northeast, not travel agency numbers. Just to be transparent here.
How does this relate to the NEC? FDU was also at this event and had an even further distance to travel. While I can’t determine whether or not they received the same amount or a larger amount for the further travel, we can comfortably say that there is a guarantee received for some games in volleyball, which is a non-revenue sport that should be a revenue sport. Have you watched women’s volleyball recently?
You’ll have your chance 11/21/25 and 11/22/25 as the NEC tournament kicks off. FDU is a third seed primed to make some noise behind players like Kylie Nott. Here’s our interview with the Knights for Media Day. Check them out tonight and tomorrow.
